What is it?
Ultraviolet or UV is an electromagnetic radiation which is invisible to
the human eye. Its main source is the sun and makes a black-light poster glow.
It is responsible for the tan and sunburn we get when we soak under the sun.

Ultraviolet light as a therapy for skin condition
Such kind of light is reproduced artificially by using devices producing
ultraviolet radiation. Among these devices are tanning booths, black lights,
curring lights, some types of laser, mercury vapor lamps and fluorescent and
incandescent lamps. Laser arch and lamps with various wavelengths are used for
medical purposes. One good example of these lamps is Germicidal lamp which
produces short-waved light and disturbs the DNA based pairing that is
responsible for the formation of molecular lesions leading to the inactivation
of bacteria and viruses. Another kind is UV-B lamps which produces the light
with wavelengths ranging from 290-320 nanometers which human sensitivity is at
high rate. It is used for treating skin conditions such as vitiligo, eczema,
psoriasis, and Lichen Planus. UV-B is different from UV-A which is for tanning
purposes.
Treating skin conditions
Eczema is a skin condition caused by inflammation. The most common type
is Atopic dermatitis. It is common in skin areas like cheeks, chin, chest,
neck, inner elbows and behind knees. Eczema is common to be itchy which can be
mild or moderate. When the condition becomes worse, it develops into inflamed
skin. Symptoms include very bad itching, dark colored patches and skin can be
rough and leathery, and some people have scaly patches. In worst cases, there
is oozing and crusting on skin. While the symptoms can go away, the itching can
go so bad and sufferers scratch it until it bleeds which makes the eczema
worse.
In treating eczema, a special device is used which produces UV-B and the
body or parts of the body is exposed to the light for a few seconds or minutes.
During the therapy, treatment is carefully recorded and light is reduced after
several sessions depending on the body reaction to the treatment. When improvements are noticed, the treatment
is temporarily stopped to see if the condition is in remission. If the
treatment is successful, a patient is advised for maintenance treatment.
It must be remembered that if the treatment produces good results, it is
not as rapid but patients are required for repeated sessions. Improvement is
generally slow and usually seen between 1 to 2 months. Such treatment is
boosting success rates; it is also less invasive. Moreover, manufacturers are
approved by the government which makes their devices safe.
